The Bin Ladin watch for Pilots

Yeslam’s Aviator watch

A while after the 9/11, I was watching a news story on CNN about Yeslam Bin Ladin, the liberal westernized half brother of Osama. He had wanted to launch Bin Laden as a branded clothing line but then his brother hijacked the family name. But he didn’t give up and is now using his first name - Yeslam for a range of watches and accessories including a wristwatch for pilots called ‘Aviator by Yeslam’. I wonder if the irony is lost on him.

Greubel Forsey: Keeping up with the Joneses

Twenty Four Seconds

Tourbillons have always been a game of one-upmanship and the new Grubel Forsey’s are no exception.

For those who don’t know what a Tourbillon is, its a cage that holds some of the important pieces of a mechanical movement such as the escapement and the balance that regulate the speed of the rotation of all the wheels. It does this so that it can protect the speed of the wheels from the effects of gravity and thus eliminate timekeeping errors that occur by a slight variation due to the usage of the user.

This cage is a rotating frame and makes one revolution per minute in order to remove any errors. The Greubel Forsey’s “24 Seconds” watch does a rotation in 24 seconds and is at a 25 degrees angle thus being parallel to the earth’s surface which is supposed to make it more error free. And if this isn’t enough, it uses materials like avional and titanium inside the movement. These weigh two to three times lower than that of steel.

Invention Piece 1

Similarly, Greubel’s “Invention Piece 1″ is a double tourbillon with an eye catching opening that provides a view of the gears and has a total of 388 parts. The watch has two triangle indicators - The Red one for the hours and the blue one for the minutes.

Of course, no bragging rights are complete without an engraved personalised message from the watchmakers on the back.

Also, The Invention Piece 1 is produced in a single edition comprising three versions of 11 eatches each, each number (1+1) chosen for its suspiciously affectionate symbolism - It represents the partners, Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey who make up Greubel Forsey.
