The Mechanical Digital Watch and the Rotating Dial

Meccanico - The World’s first Analog Digital Mechanical watch

If there is one brand that tries to raise the bar every year at Baselworld, it’s de Grisogono. Rather than revisit or reinterpret existing construction methods and principles in mechanical watchmaking, dG tries to do something new. This year, they have out done themselves with the Meccanico dG which is a complex mechanical watch which tells time both in Analog and Digital manner. The handwound watch comprises of 651 components

The Meccanico Watch

The time information is displayed by an array of 23 horizontally and vertically positioned microsegments. Vertical segments are 9 mm high and weigh at most 25 milligrams while the horizontal segments measure 2.90 mm in length and weigh only 10 milligrams. The segments have four faces: two opposing visible faces fitted with colored strips and two opposing unmarked faces. Time changes are effected by 90° rotations of the required segment or segments. Involving one to twelve segments, time changes are lightning fast.

The Otturatore

That’s not all, dG also introduced the Otturatore. A wristwatch with a rotating face that reveals a hidden display of seconds, date, moon phasea and power reserve at every 90 degree turn.

Spot the Difference

Edition 300

This year, Rotary released a collection of watches under the label of ‘Rotary Editions’ that unfortunately suffer from a lack of inspiration. To put it bluntly, they are all real close rip offs. Let’s make a game of it and see if you can identify them. Post your responses in the comment box. Hint: There’s a Patek Phillippe, Cartier, Jaeger Le Coultre and a Richard Mille.

Random Basel

Chalk graffiti greeted visitors on Saturday morning through out the hall with messages referring to Blood Diamonds, Tibet and the prostitution of Basel. The best was the mock protest sign that read - Time Kills! :)

Baselworld was overbooked this year so brands like Casio, Kenzo, H Stern etc. had a seperate tent with an extended lounge for visitors to relax in

The Swarovski section in the extension. The lights on the ground are actually spotlit jewelry

Themed car parked outside for Havana inspired swiss made brand, Cuervo Sobrino.

Btw, the coverage continues till the 10th so stay tuned.

Rado goes bling

Ceramic XL Jubile

If all things fail, add stones. Rado took a turn for the worse with their new updates especially their Ceramic XL Pave that looks even grotesque in person (trust me, the watches looked okay in the picture by comparison). A lot of other brands followed the same trend i.e. Carl F. Bucherer’s Alacria Royals. See previous post for an image of it.
