I had the opportunity to finally see a prototype of Omega’s “Alaska Project” which is a distinctive outer case for a Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch that was first developed in the early 1970’s in order to see if you could have a Speedmaster function properly at the extreme temperatures in Space.
NASA, however, declared that the Speedmaster was perfect as it was and already met all of their needs; thus, the Speedmaster “Alaska Project” with its distinctive red-anodised aluminium outer case remained a prototype.
Last year in April of 2007, The prototype sold for CHF 64,900 prompting Omega to launch a limited edition this year of 1,970 pieces which is good news for me because I really took a liking for the case. No word on the price.
One thing to note is that while the aesthetic of the protective cover is appealing, its all function – even the color was chosen because no other color offered the same level of protection from temperature shock. The case is resistant to a range of 400 degrees.
